Pressure Points
What is Tui Na Massage?

Tui Na massage is a type of massage in the scope of practice of an acupuncturist/ Tradition Chinese practitioner similar to the standard western massage. The Tui, or also known as effleurage, is the technique of gliding. The Na, or petrissage, is the kneading technique, is a combination of the following methods: shaking, friction, vibration, pulling, rocking and rotation. Even though the Tui Na and Western massage have many similarities, Tui Na massage is more specifically therapeutic.

Most people put this type of massage somewhere in the middle between Shiatsu and acupressure. On the one hand, it is similar to acupressure because Tui Na massage practitioners press and hold the body at the acupressure points to directly affect the flow of the energy. And on the other hand, it is similar to Shiatsu because of the different techniques the practitioners use to lubricate and manipulate the joints. They use different types of techniques and rhythmic compression along the energy paths to achieve this.

One of the best things about Tui Na massage is that it focuses on specific problems, such as chronic pain in the skeletal system, joints and muscles. This type of massage does wonders for people with arthritis, neck pain, shoulder pain, pain in the back, muscle spasms, joint pain and sciatica. Luckily, the tremendous benefits don't stop here as it also helps people with tension, stress, migraines, headaches, constipation, and insomnia.

Tui Na massage helps with existing problems and benefits preventive healthcare, which means that this type of massage doesn't only work on the joints, bones, and muscles. Instead, the practitioners use their hands to assess the energy flow and distribution. As a result, the patient stays in good health, and the body's energy remains in balance. Tui Na massage also improves emotional and mental health.

The type of Tui Na massage popular today is very similar to physical therapists, osteopaths and chiropractors. However, as it became more popular in the West, the techniques and the styles have changed. In addition, Western practitioners don't do the bone setting as the practitioners in China have as their scope of practice.

As we already mentioned, Tui Na massage is the most similar to the conventional western massage. Unlike Western massage techniques, Tui Na massage techniques include moves like frictions, pulling, gliding, kneading, shaking, vibration, rocking, rotation and percussion. However, unlike Swedish massages, whose primary goal is to relax the patient, this massage also has therapeutical properties. Tui Na massage is often a combination of Chinese herbalism, cupping, acupuncture and moxibustion.
