What is Tui Na Massage?

Tui Na massage is a type of massage in the scope of practice of an acupuncturist/ Tradition Chinese practitioner similar to the standard western massage. The Tui, or also known as effleurage, is the technique of gliding. The Na, or petrissage, is the kneading technique, is a combination of the following methods: shaking, friction, vibration, pulling, rocking and rotation. Even though the Tui Na and Western massage have many similarities, Tui Na massage is more specifically therapeutic.

 

Most people put this type of massage somewhere in the middle between Shiatsu and acupressure. On the one hand, it is similar to acupressure because Tui Na massage practitioners press and hold the body at the acupressure points to directly affect the flow of the energy. And on the other hand, it is similar to Shiatsu because of the different techniques the practitioners use to lubricate and manipulate the joints. They use different types of techniques and rhythmic compression along the energy paths to achieve this.

Tui Na massage is often a combination of Chinese herbalism, cupping, acupuncture and moxibustion.
